Trek past Marion Lake to a winter wonderland.

It was dark when we drove almost to the trailhead before before the snow was too deep on the road to continue. We camped at the trailhead Friday night. The weather cooled overnight and the wet snow froze to the tents.
Lake Anne is the first lake that you pass. It is slowly melting out.
Lake Ann is in the day use only area and no camping or fires are allowed.
This is Marion Lake. I guess an upwelling of water keeps the ice from freezing solid.
Here is the rest of our group taking a lunch break in the B&B burn. In front is Jerimiah, Justin, and Andy.
Frost on the bark and moss makes interesting patterns. The frost covered moss was swinging in the wind.
Small branches covered with frost show which way the wind was blowing during the night at our campsite.
Plenty of frosty trees at the camp makes you feel cold.
Returning back to the trailhead we passed these interesting cornices which formed at the top of a very steep slope.

Here is the beginning of the igloo I constructed. Building it keeps me warm.

Snowshoing at Mt. Rainier can be incredible.

We went up to Mt. Rainier on New Year's Day and the parking lot was almost entirely empty, as this photo shows. The parking lot filled up later in the day.
What a rare winter day where the sky is azure blue and the snow titanium white. With no new snow for the past several days, a perfect day for a snowshoe trip.
Venturing up from the Visitor's Center the trees quickly become very sparse. The trails are all nearly empty as most people sleep in.
How beautiful Mt. Rainier is on a sunny day.

Bells Mountain, WA

The wild Iris (Latin Name: Iris tenax) are next to the trail. This is the section of trail that is an old ATV track. Notice the lush growth closing in on Bells Mountain Trail.

Cedar Creek runs along the trail for the last couple of miles, creating a lovely sound at any time of year.

Jasmine wonders why I'm stopping. She seems to say "Don't stop to take a picture of me. I want to get back to the car."
Jasmine waits on one of the sturdy bridges along the northern end of the trail. You can see the bridges were designed to accommodate horses. Even cleats have been screwed to the deck. Even though the trail is wide, I have seen very few horses on this section of trail.

A pleasant hike to overlooks of the east end of the Columbia River Gorge

Just a bit uphill from the trailhead is this sign for the Cherry Orchard Trail. It is easy to walk farther than the 2 miles indicated on the sign.
Here is a nice view of the cliffs along the Columbia River from the Cherry Orchard Trail.
Climbing up above the river, the trail passes this interesting rock promontory overlooking the Columbia River.
Looking towards the Columbia River you can see how the lack of rainfall prevents very many trees from growing along the Cherry Orchard Trail.
The Cherry Orchard Trail passes along this nice area that looks perfect for viewing the Gorge.
Continuing to climb above the river, there are nice views to the west. One lone oak tree holds onto its leaves late into the year.
Lichen covered oak trees line parts of the trail above the Columbia River.
Near the cherry orchard are some nice views of the nearby cliffs and the Columbia River.

Looking across the Columbia, you can see some trees holding on to their fall foliage in November.

An interesting looking green bug walks very slowly in the chilly weather near the cherry orchard. This must be a tough bug to withstand the freezing nighttime temperatures.
A few puffy clouds look almost like snow on the hills along the Columbia River Gorge.
The trail is a fairly narrow track and can get muddy on rainy days.
A small pond along the Cherry Orchard Trail provides a watering place for small animals and insects. Oak trees reflect on the still surface.

Barlow Butte, OR

Snowshoe up to great views of Mt. Hood.

On the first .5 mile of the outbound leg, the trail crosses a small stream, then climbs back out of the little valley.
The snow-covered forest road makes for an easy trail. The grade is gentle and steady.
Stickman joined the hike for a while but he decided to veg out and admire the view of Mt. Hood.
The temperature was in the low 40's this day and this spider was slowly walking over the snow.
Here is a picture of the place where you leave the main road. The trail to the right leads up to some meadows. The path you want heads across the meadows and to the left.
The forest road has several nice views of Mt. hood and the White River valley.

The road passes some short cliffs but trees above prevent avalanches.
Some rocks along the road make an interesting pattern with the snow.

Once you reach the ridge, the route is pretty clear heading towards Barlow Butte.
The first monolith that you come to juts up from the ridge. This is the rock that you skirt on the left side as you approach from the meadows.
Mt. Jefferson can be seen from some places along Barlow Ridge.
Looking back along Barlow Ridge, you can see the two monoliths that jut up from the ridge. The closest one is in the trees and the farther one juts straight up from the ridge.
Here is the meadow, looking north. You can see how open the meadow is and a ridge in the distance.
Between the meadow and Barlow Ridge is an open forest which is pretty easy to walk across the hillside.
A large conk grows on a tree on the hillside below Barlow Butte.

The trail leaves the thick forest where it crosses back over the West Fork of the Salmon River.

Take an easy hike to great views of Emmons Glacier.

A small log bridge crosses the Inter Fork of the White River on Emmons Glacier View Trail.
A turquoise lake provides a nice contrast to Mt. Rainier close to the Emmons Glacier View Trail.
Mt. Rainier and Little Tahoma rest under a blanket of clouds along Emmons Glacier View Trail.
Here it is easy to see the U-shaped valley made by the Emmons Glacier when it once filled the valley.
Glacial flour causes this lake to be turquoise colored. This is from the Emmons View Trail.
The toe of the Emmons Glacier is covered in debris that has fallen onto the glacier as it is constantly pushed down the mountain.

Glacier Basin, WA

Hike up to a scenic basin below Mt. Rainier.

Wonderful clouds were lit by the early morning sun on my way to the trailhead.
The beginning of the trail is well marked.
Hundreds of volunteers donated thousands of hours of work to rebuild this trail. Here is an example of a rock wall along the Glacier Basin Trail.
A pleasant waterfall graces the Glacier Basin Trail.

Some wildflowers bloom late into the year along the Glacier Basin Trail.

Debris washed down the valley from the melting glaciers to litter the valley floor.
Glacial debris covers the ground at the 6,700 foot level at Glacier Basin. Not many plants can survive in this harsh environment.

The summit of Mt. Rainier peeks out from the slopes of Glacier Basin.

Old copper mining equipment is slowly being overgrown along the Glacier Basin Trail. You can only see the ruins in a couple of places along the trail.

Klickitat River Trail, WA

Bike mostly downhill on this rails-to-trails.

The Harms Road Trailhead is up on the prairies between Klickitat and Goldendale. The nearby hills catch the early fall snows and the windswept grasslands offer little shelter.
Starting down into Swale Canyon the rocks and reflective pools of water make a nice setting.
Midway through Swale Canyon the trail is mostly well packed with just a few 100-yard patches of loose gravel.
Looking down Swale Canyon you can see the gentle curves and easy downhill grade of the old railroad.
Loose rock tumbles down the canyon walls but seldom reaches the trail.

The Fisher Hill trestle has been redecked by Klickitat County and was opened on Jan. 6, 2011. This is about 2 miles from the Columbia River.

Hike along the Crooked River and more.

Multi-colored rocks jut above the surrounding landscape at Smith Rock State Park.
Kevin has his coffee to start the day.
Hundreds of climbers work on their techniques on weekends at Smith Rock State Park.
The Crooked River makes a big oxbow around Smith Rock State Park.
The cliff faces at Smith Rock State Park are a wonderful mix of colors. I think they appear best in the early morning light.
I love these rugged cliff faces at Smith Rock State Park and rock climbers love them too. This is one of the premier rock climbing sites in the United States.
What's not to love when you look at the textures and colors of these rocks?
The roughness of this rock makes a fantastic interplay of light and shadows in the early morning sun at Smith Rock State Park.
I can't imagine climbing up this cliff face but many climbers do just that at Smith Rock State Park.
An gnarled old Juniper tree provides a clue as to the hot summers that occur here.
Central Oregon has many more sunny days than the Pacific Coast. Here, just a few clouds are sprinkled across the sky, but the weather was increasing cloudy to the west.
Fall foilage provides a nice complement to the peaks of Smith Rock State Park.
Look at the wonderful colors of this rock contrasted against the blue sky.
A few trees grow along the Crooked River as it wraps around Smith Rock State Park. The texture and colors of the rocks are constantly changing as you walk along the trail.

Monkey Face is the tower of rock in the left side of the picture. It looks like it could fall over at any time, but is actually a very large spire of rock.
Some rocks seem precariously balanced on the peaks of Smith Rock State Park.
The Three Sisters can be seen from Smith Rock State Park when the weather is clear.
The Three Sisters are North Sister, also known as "Faith", Middle Sister, "Hope", and South Sister, "Charity", provide a nice backdrop to the town of Terrebone, Oregon.
From the east side of Smith Rock State Park, there is a great view of the park and the Three Sisters beyond.
This is the highest point of any trail in Smith Rock State Park. Even here, you can find rock bolts permanently installed just out of sight.
The striations in the rocks suggest the land was tilted in some past geologic time.
A great view showing the basalt base underlying Smith Rock State Parka and the browns and reds of the top layer of rocks that were formed from welded tuff and rhyolite rocks. The welded tuff was formed from ash that was melted together as it fell onto the ground.
More rock spires at Smith Rock State Park provide for great scenery as you hike through the park.

Smith Rock State Park is on the dry side of Oregon so most of the days are sunny or mostly sunny.

Otter Bench, OR

Hike through the scrub with views of Crooked River Canyon.

The Crooked River has cut a deep canyon through the basalt of Central Oregon.
A side trail drops down to the Crooked River. A deep pool of water eddies beside the trail.
Rapids in the Crooked River provide a nice backdrop of sound as you hike along this section of trail.
The Crooked River is the main attraction of this hike. The vegetation in the area is sparse and brushy.
There is a lot of columnar basalt along this hike. The columns are hundreds of feet tall.
Vegetation does not get much moisture in the canyon. This dead sage bush attests to the harsh conditions near the river.
The Crooked River turns into Lake Billy Chinook at the turnaround point of the hike. High basalt cliffs provide a nice vantage point.
Junipers, Sagebrush, thistles, and grasses dominate the landscape along the Otter Bench Trail.
Bleached bones attest to the survivor of the fittest maxim.
Looking downriver on the Otter Bench Trail shows the near-desert scenery of the area. The wide-open spaces make for a tranquil hike.
Columnar basalt forms high cliffs along part of the Otter Bench Trail.
Rapids in the Crooked River would have made it difficult for early pioneers to navigate the river. The deep gorge made crossings few and far between in this area.

A fantastic view hike high above Crater Lake.

Nature provides infinite patterns. I liked the way the crook of this long-dead tree had the moss growing on it. I wonder how many years it took the moss to grow in this harsh climate.
Take time to look at the patterns of nature along the Garfield Peak Trail. An old know that has been sandblasted over time looks like an eye watching all who hike the trail.
Back on the paved trail heading towards the lodge, you can stop and admire the beautiful blue of Crater Lake.
Heading back down the trail gives you more spectacular views of Crater Lake, Wizard Island, and the surrounding area.

Plaikni Falls, OR

A short hike on a new trail to a small waterfall.

The creek soon flows into the woods and away from the trail.
Hikers pause to take a break along the Plaikni Falls Trail in Crater Lake National Park.
Plaikni Falls cascades about 20 feet over a rock cliff.
Plaikni Falls shoots down the cliff and then tumbles down a stony stream bed.
The spray from the waterfall dampens areas below the falls and allows these Monkeyflowers to thrive. The constant spray also supports mosquitoes near the falls.
The wide, well groomed trail travels through Kerr Valley.
Anderson Bluffs tower above the Plaikni Falls Trail.
Cones and mossy stick decorate spots along the trail to Plaikni Falls.
Plaikni Falls Trailhead is well signed but the parking lot is pretty small and can easily fill up on sunny days.

Sweet Creek Trail, OR

Hike along a lovely stream with several waterfalls.

Sweet Creek cascades down a small fall and into a tranquil pool in the creek.
Exposed rocks during lower water give a chance to explore the rocks and pools along Sweet Creek.

The Sweet Creek Trail goes through a small canyon and an elevated walkway gives a great view of the creek while providing great views of the creek.
A memorial plaque dedicated to Annice Johnson along the elevated walkway on Sweet Creek Trail honors a friend of Sweet Creek.

A picturesque Sweet Creek flows through the lush Oregon Coast forest.

There is an alternate access to Homestead Falls but you miss walking along the pleasant trail.
Sweet Creek Falls is a great place to take a break and sit on the mossy rocks.

I thought I would try taking a picture of Sweet Creek Falls from a bit of a different angle.
You can get pretty close to Sweet Creek Falls, but the rocks get slicker from the spray as you get closer to the falls.
The sun makes pools of light as it pierces the forest canopy along Sweet Creek Trail.
Many months of rain lets mosses, Salal, Ferns and wildflowers carpet the ground along Sweet Creek Trail.
