Vicinity Location:<\/strong> The trailhead is about 65 miles east of Portland, in the Columbia River Gorge.<\/p>\n

Directions:<\/strong>
\nFrom Portland, drive on I-84 East from Portland for about 65 miles, driving past Hood River.<\/p>\n

Take exit 69 for U.S. 30 and drive along the off-ramp for about .1 mile and turn right at the stop sign onto U.S. 30 E. Drive for 2.8 miles, passing through Mosier, to the parking area for the Memaloose Overlook on the left side of the road.<\/p>\n

There is no restroom at the trailhead.<\/p>\n

No permits are needed to park here.
\n<\/strong>
\nLength and Elevation:<\/strong>
\nTotal length is about 2 miles. Elevation gain is 350 feet and 350 foot loss. Elevation at the trailhead is 540 feet. The high point is 827 feet.<\/p>\n

\nThe 2 miles is not the total length of this trail as there are connections to other trails.<\/p>\n

Review: 5\/11\/2014, 5\/14\/2017<\/strong>
\nThe trail starts directly across the road from the Memaloose overlook. Walk along the rocky dirt path that passes through an open forest of Oregon white oaks with many kinds of wildflowers spread across the forest floor. Spring brings Chocolate Lillies, Miners Lettuce, and buttercups. Later spring brings Lupine, Balsamroot, Indian Paintbrush, and many more.<\/p>\n

The trail climbs moderately through fits and starts, passes a few way trails, and skirts a couple of houses. Bear east a bit and drop down to a small spring-fed stream. There is a downed oak tree which can be used to cross the stream or it can be jumped with just a slight squelch in the mud along the bank.<\/p>\n

Keep to the main path which heads uphill through the open forest where pine trees tower over the scrubby oaks which are at the beginning of the trail. The trail climbs gently up to the top of Marsh Hill for wonderful 360 degree views of the Gorge, though the surrounding hills hide much of the Columbia River.<\/p>\n
