This old bulldozer was once part of a logging operation. Another example of what the 1980 blast destroyed.- Logging equipment destroyed in the 1980 blast. This was a yarder used to pull logs to the top of the ridge.
- Above the South Coldwater Trail, you can see an old stump on the rock outcropping. This area was being logged as the 1980 blast occurred.
- Tent caterpillars create a horror scene for plants growing along the trail this year (2012). The webs remind me of Shelob's lair in Lord of the Rings.
- The South Coldwater Trail begins in a new forest and has a moderate climb up to a ridge. Foxglove stretch for the sky in this small clearing.
- Looking down towards the lake from the ridge southeast of Coldwater Lake, you see this blasted fire truck soon after passing the yarder at the top of the ridge.
- Coldwater Lake from the ridge southeast of the lake. This section of forest was being logged before the blast so there aren't many downed trees in this area.
- The trail breaks out of the forest where the hillside bore the full brunt of the 1980 volcanic blast. Still no trees growing after more than 30 years have passed.
- Another view of some of the logging equipment destroyed in the 1980 blast. This was a yarder used to pull logs to the top of the ridge.
- More equipment destroyed in the volcanic blast of 1980. Not a flake of paint remains on this equipment. The paint was completely scoured off by the blast debris.
- Wildflowers bloom along the trail because the old undergrowth was blasted away and covered with a layer of ash providing pioneer plants such as Lupine an ideal place to grow.
- Penstamon is one of the wildflowers that bloom in July along the South Coldwater Trail.
- Looking northwest from the ridge southeast towards Coldwater Lake, you see this blasted fire truck soon after passing the yarder at the top of the ridge.
- Looking towards the far shore of Coldwater Lake, you can still see the trees that were leveled in the 1980 blast. Notice how all the dead trees on the far hill are oriented to the blast direction.
- Skeletons are all that remain of the forest in this part of the 1980 volcanic blast. The terrain allows abundant wildflowers.
