- Spring flowers bloom in patches around Horsethief Butte.
- Stickman joined the hike for a while but he decided to veg out and admire the view of Mt. Hood.
- The first monolith that you come to juts up from the ridge. This is the rock that you skirt on the left side as you approach from the meadows.
- The forest road has several nice views of Mt. hood and the White River valley.

- The road passes some short cliffs but trees above prevent avalanches.
- The snow-covered forest road makes for an easy trail. The grade is gentle and steady.
- The temperature was in the low 40's this day and this spider was slowly walking over the snow.
- The trail leaves the thick forest where it crosses back over the West Fork of the Salmon River.
- The West Fork of the Salmon River run crystal clear under an old bridge along an old Forest Service road.
- This is Marion Lake. I guess an upwelling of water keeps the ice from freezing solid.
- Venturing up from the Visitor's Center the trees quickly become very sparse. The trails are all nearly empty as most people sleep in.
- We went up to Mt. Rainier on New Year's Day and the parking lot was almost entirely empty, as this photo shows. The parking lot filled up later in the day.
- What a rare winter day where the sky is azure blue and the snow titanium white. With no new snow for the past several days, a perfect day for a snowshoe trip.
