- Trail signs at the first junction of Dog Mountain Trail. The trail to the right passes a viewpoint but the trail on the left is shorter and stays in the woods. There will be plenty of views later.

- The skeleton of a tree makes a silhouette and shows the power of the east winds in the Gorge.
- Looking west you can see the Columbia River in the distance and also see how far you have traveled from the river.
- Mimulus or Monkey Flower blooms at several places along the Gales Creek Trail.
- The Columbia River can barely be seen from this clearing in the trail.
