- The trail dips down and crosses this small creek, then switchbacks up to the southern end of the Cape Lookout North Trail.
- Snow buries a bridge on the southwest side of Longmire Meadows. The water is still warm enough to stay open all winter.
- Rocky cliffs along the trail mean good views if you can get to the top of the cliffs.
- Frog Pelt lichen (Latin name: Peltigera neopolydactyla) near Triple Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.
- The forest path fades into the distance on the Glacier View Trail.
- Near Camp Smokey is an open patch of ground with nice views of Mt. Hood. This is one of the few area on the Plateau where you can get a good GPS reading.

- Some birds came by while we were climbing up to Piker's Peak. I suspect they were looking for handouts and moved on when we didn't give them anything.
- Water cascades down cliffs in several places along the trail during the wet season. This is just past a switchback on the west side of Oneonta Creek.
- Trillium blooming along the North Cape Lookout Trail.
- Looking over the Gorge to Greenleaf Peak in Washington.
- Mushrooms are commonly seen along the Stevens Creek Trail in Mt. Rainier National Park. These mushrooms are growing on a dying tree.

- Walking up the Burroughs Mountain Trail from Frozen Lake you can see the Mt. Fremont Lookout as a tiny dark cube at the left edge of the ridge in the center of the picture.
